About

Steven McCardle

Steven McCardle, born in 1978, is a Norfolk-based artist originally from Wellington, New Zealand. He is best known for developing a distinct visual style that bridges contemporary technology and traditional art history.

McCardle's work centers on a fusion of digital pixelation, tangible reality, and classic masterpieces. By fragmenting his subjects into pixel-like blocks or structures, his art challenges human perception. His pieces are designed to actively engage the viewer, deliberately encouraging people to take a step back to appreciate the full picture and see how the individual abstract shapes resolve into a cohesive, recognisable image.

His portfolio explores the world around us through a digital-meets-analog lens. His main creative inspirations include:

People & Icons: Pop culture figures and musicians, such as British musician Jarvis Cocker and artist David Hockney.

Landscapes: Real-world environments and coastal settings around East Anglia, including Southwold Beach Huts.

Art History: Referencing and reinterpreting works like J.M.W. Turner's self-portrait.

He's available for commissions if you are interested in a unique piece for your home or business.
